Stocked in walnut, stained to a dark brown, this iron trimmed flint longrifle is made in the Virginia style. The iron buttplate is wide and flat to best spread the recoil over a large area. The .54 caliber swamped octagon barrel is 42" length. Assembled by M. Avance this rifle is signed on the top flat of the barrel and typical of this popular maker's work. This rifle is offered as used with a bright well maintained bore that is ready to shoot. Trigger reach is 13-3/4" to fit today's man size shooter. The rifle weighs 8.7 pounds.

The 42" long swamped octagon barrel is cut rifled with seven lands and radius grooves with a slow twist for a tightly patched round ball. The bore is bright and well maintained. . The swamped barrel is thickest at the breech, tapers to a narrow waist, and flares at the muzzle. The barrel is finished to a smooth patina gray finish. An iron blade front sight with brass base is dovetailed 1-3/4" behind the muzzle and the flat top rear sight is dovetailed 10" forward of the breech. The top flat is signed M. Avance just ahead of the breech.

The walnut stock is stained to a dark brown and finished to a satin sheen. The lock, iron furniture, and barrel are all finished to dark pewter gray finish. The buttstock is fitted with a wide flat buttplate to spread the felt recoil over a large area. The buttplate is finished with five flats and a wedding band. The flared tang of the barrel is retained by a single tang bolt. An engraved brass acorn inlay decorates the top of the wrist. The triggerguard has a wide open bow for the early style double lever double set triggers. No toeplate is fitted, instead the toe of the buttplate stands just above the wood to provide a small amount of protection. An entry pipe with long skirt, and two forward pipes mount the 3/8" ramrod. The ramrod is fitted with a brass tip with 8-32 threads to accept loading and shooting accessories. The iron sideplate is inlet flush with the side panel. The buttstock is shaped with a cheek piece for a right hand shooter.

Sure-fire ignition is provided by this deluxe large Siler flint lock. Finished to a pewter gray, the lock plate has a hand forged appearance. We recommend our 3/4" knapped English flints for use with this lock. Fast ignition is assured by the slotted vent liner, positioned well above the bottom of the pan, centered on the heat of the flash. If your flint longrifle suffers from that infamous slow whoosh-bang ignition delay, study the work of today's best gun makers, and position your vent well centered on the pan, high above the bottom, to serve as a window on the center of the flash.

The double lever double set triggers have a long Germanic style rear trigger. These set triggers are properly tuned to fire from the set, or unset position. You can set the triggers with the cock in any position. Adjust the screw between the two triggers, inboard to reduce set trigger release pressure, our outboard to require a stronger pressure. When screwed fully inboard, the adjustment screw disables the rear trigger, so the rifle must be fired from the front trigger, which requires about a four pound pull for release. It is wise to disable the rear trigger, when hunting in very cold weather. The set trigger can provide very light release, perhaps an ounce or two, for accurate aimed shooting during pleasant weather.

We recommend simple and attractive Virginia rifle the French & Indian War era reenactor or the Revolutionary War volunteer, seeking a suitable gun for militia duty. The bore is bright and this rifle is ready to shoot. Order it for a ten day visual inspection. You will be delighted. Else if it does not fit you, return it in unfired condition for same-day refund.
